Lee Ann Womack Lyrics
"I Hope You Dance"
I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat, but always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty-handed
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance
I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Livin' might mean takin' chances but they're worth takin'
Lovin' might be a mistake but it's worth makin'
Don't let some hell-bent heart leave you bitter
When you come close to sellin' out, reconsider
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance (Time is a wheel in constant motion)
I hope you dance (Always rolling us along)
I hope you dance (Tell me, who wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
I hope you dance (Where those years have gone?)
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
Dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance (Time is a wheel in constant motion)
I hope you dance (Always rolling us along)
I hope you dance (Tell me, who wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
I hope you dance (Where those years have gone?)
(Dance) (Tell me, who wants to look back on their years and wonder)
(Dance) (Where those years have gone?)

These lyrics seem like a narration of a mother to her children. She wishes them to embrace life and take chances. Lee Ann Womack told Billboard in 2000, "It made me think about my daughters and the different times in their lives... But it can be so many things to different people. Certainly, it can represent everything a parent hopes for their child, but it can also be for a relationship that's ending as a fond wish for the other person's happiness or for someone graduating, having a baby, or embarking on a new path. It fits almost every circ*mstance I can think of."
"I Hope You Dance" features the country-music band "Sons Of The Desert" on vocals.
Tia Sillers, who co-wrote this with Mark D. Sanders, recalled, "The whole thing started when I was at the beach by myself, and I was standing at the ocean, feeling so tiny and inconsequential. And then I went into the writing appointment with Mark with this list of 'I hopes', like 'I hope this' and 'I hope that'. [...] Mark was such a visionary with his production and arrangement. Lee Ann is always about lyrics first and did such a great job, and I don't want to say it went in a pop direction, but it did end up being more pop. But to me it was really more of a heartfelt folk song."
With "I Hope You Dance", Lee Ann Womack won a Grammy award for "Best Country Song" in 2001. She also won the awards from the Country Music Association, Academy of Country Music, Nashville Songwriters Association International, and Broadcast Music Incorporated for "Song of the Year".
